If an all-liquid diet is necessary, not for weight loss, ideas?

March 9th, 2010

Hi
Due to a car accident, our child is on an all liquid diet. We could use ideas, other than what the doc gave us. We have learned how to freeze some things, like vegetable juice and then he drinks it through a straw, or eats it in small frozen pieces, small enough to get through his mouthwires. Jaw is wired shut. In the hospital, he had nutrition through feeding tubes. Please give ideas for a balanced diet! Also, we are having trouble getting enough calories into him. I’m scared. He has to do this for 4 weeks! The docs say he won’t starve. I’m not so sure!

Fruit smoothies are good- use a lot of yogurt/milk to make it thin enough to drink through a straw.
Vegetable broth is also good. You can also puree soups with chicken and veggies.

nutrition label question – egg beaters?

March 8th, 2010

I have been watching labels on things and was wondering if i should take the calorie per gram count before or after the product is cooked ? For example I have egg beats, do i weigh them out on my food scale in the liquid form before cooking or do I cook them and then weigh them once i have them in my bowl already cooked ? Do things weigh the same in different forms, solid – liquid? Same thing goes for vegatables, I have some that are frozen and would like to know the same thing, do i weigh them by grams for the calorie count before or after they are unthawed ? does the nutrition label consider the water content of them when they are frozen ? because if i let them unthaw they are sure to be less heavy when the water drains from them.
the label lists it in grams. and i am not trying to lose weight. just trying to maintain.. and i noticed i am having a hard time in doing , so i would like to watch how much i am really eating.

The best advice is to go with the nutrition per serve or serving, This will be the weight after it has been cooked.

The difference in vegetables is negligible, even after cooking you are literally talking about a few calories.

The main differences are in foods that absorb a lot of water.

RICE & PASTA are the biggest. 100g of dry rice will weight twice as much once cooked. With these foods you need to look a the info to see whether it is cooked or uncooked nutritional info.

Pretty much the rest isn’t worth worrying about. For example, bread … when it’s toasted it’s lighter, but it still has the same number of calories that it did before it was toasted!

My advice, try not to get too caught up in it all … I’m a professional and even I find nutrition labels confusing sometimes!!!

Can we make Fractionated Oil from Watermelon?

March 7th, 2010

As you can notice,I’ve been asking questions about the watermelon for the second time around. As explained on my previou question,my group & I are undergoing an InnoVention (Innovation Invention) Project in school & we chose the watermelon as our source because it’s environmental & natural.I’m just asking if we can make Fractionated Oil out of Watermelon.Fractionated oils are used in some foods such as chocolate coatings.Since partially hydrogenated oils create unhealthy trans fats, food companies want to use different methods of changing liquid oils into thicker fats. Fractionated oil is heated, then cooled and this process separates the oil into separate fractions, the lower melting liquid fractions and the higher melting liquid fractions. There are many sources but the ones I have found so far are from her: http://nutrition.about.com/od/askyournutritionist/f/fractionatedoil.htm
I have already tried Wikipedia but it’s too complicated for our part.Thank you very much for your answers!

You can make oil from the mature seed. If you have a seedless watermellon, oh well!!!
