But I don’t want to short change on nutrition either.

What’s a reasonable plan?

Just take one-a-days for your body, and you should get omega-3s because those are good for your mind. Those with a well balanced diet will be close to perfect.

To avoid sports anemia, especially to females who lose blood every month due to menstruation, the mineral iron should be part of an athlete’s list of sports nutrition supplements. Iron, in blood, is responsible for carrying clean oxygen to healthy body cells and removing carbon dioxide from them.

Athletes who have sports anemia have low hemoglobin level. You can easily spot an anemic athlete: he is always exhausted and seems to be in fatigue.

Taking iron supplements should be done with caution. There is such a thing as iron overdose. Consult your physician first before you take iron as part of your sports nutrition supplement.

Because I’m prone to talking a lot of ****, I’ve gotten myself into a bit of a bet. An ad for Slim Fast says that it provides 1/3 of your daily nutrition. My friend, god love him, pointed out (quite rightly) that it doesn’t provide 1/3 of your daily calories, which are an essential part of nutrition. I told him that calories are not necessary for small amounts of time and that cutting calories was the point.

He then proceeded to explain that, if Slim Fast did indeed provide 1/3 nutrition in one drink, then I wouldn’t mind drinking just three of those suckers a day for a prolonged amount of time. Now, I’m a little overweight, although my BMI is healthy. Perhaps, I’m just over fat. I told him I didn’t think I was the prime candidate for a 6 month liquid diet study.

He suggested two week and I suggested he pay me for my hardships. I was much cockier about this 4 hours ago when I was slightly drunk. My question is 4 fold.

1)Would 3 normal Slim Fast shakes provide 100% of your daily nutrition? He said I can continue taking any vitamins I normally take, but I only take essential oils.

2)Besides feeling crabby and tired for 2 weeks, am I likely to experience any other side effects with low calories but adequate nutrition? 3 shakes is only 600 calories, I believe. But it is only for 14 days.

3)What sort of weight loss should I be expecting from this? I’m 5′ 4" and 140-ish lbs. I’ve been trying to tone up and replace some of the fat with muscle, but I’m not looking to drop 20 lbs or anything ridiculous. I figure I’ll probably only lose about 5 pounds, but am I underestimating?

4)What should I buy with my winnings?! Besides real food, of course.

Actually 3 slimfast shakes provide you with only slightly less calories than you need to maintain your current weight. Besides feeling a little hungry and grumpy, you will probably not notice any real side effects (maybe diarrhea). You may lose a little weight. I just wouldn’t continue for much more than 2 weeks if I were you.

We had a stray feline come staggering into our garage a couple of weeks ago. She was very emaciated, so she’s been eating everything in sight. We took her to the vet and she seems to be in overall good health, given her advanced age. Can I give her that liquid Ensure to make sure she is getting the protein and other nutrition she needs?

I would not give her the Ensure. Looking at the ingredients, it is mostly sugar and milk protein which will most likely just give her diarrhea.

What I would do is get a good grain free food for her, or one that is primarily meat (no corn, wheat, etc). These are high in protein and a better protein source. Cats are carnivores so they need meat as their primary diet. The link below will give you more information on cat nutrition.

What I gave mine that were needing to put on weight after an illness was meat flavored baby food. Just be sure not to get the ones with onions..I use Gerber and Beech Nut. Warm it slightly in the microwave. You could give her a jar a day for a few days. Baby food does not have the proper nutrients to be a primary diet staple, but it is good for situations such as this.

Another thing I do as a treat for my cats is get the ground chicken or turkey and fry it for them. I divide the tray into small cubes and freeze. Then I get a cube out, thaw and fry. They love it and it is good for them.

These products are a waste of money, don’t work, and some are actually bad for you with nasty side effects. No pill, potion or supplement will help. Please don’t fall for all the spam adverts you see.

All you need is a good healthy diet – lots of fruit and veg, and exercise. It takes time and motivation

I’m so stumped for the longest time on this question for my nutrition class hours. It’s not in my textbook nor can I find it on Google. Someone please help!

This site shows it as having 118 calories per tablespoon: http://www.a1nutrition.com/buy-fearn-liquid_lecithin/ As 3 teaspoons = 1 tablespoon then a teaspoon contains around 40 calories.

Nice to see that lecithin is extracted with hexane, bleached with hydrogen peroxide and mixed with acetone to make granules.

What’s the reckoning that lecithin is contaminated with hexane, especially if quality control is dodgy?: "May cause impaired fertility. Harmful by inhalation. Irritant. May cause CNS depression. Prolonged exposure may cause serious health damage." http://msds.chem.ox.ac.uk/HE/hexane.html
