What can I give a feline to feel better quickly?

We had a stray feline come staggering into our garage a couple of weeks ago. She was very emaciated, so she’s been eating everything in sight. We took her to the vet and she seems to be in overall good health, given her advanced age. Can I give her that liquid Ensure to make sure she is getting the protein and other nutrition she needs?

Thank you.

How wonderful you are giving this kitty a second chance!

I would not give her the Ensure. Looking at the ingredients, it is mostly sugar and milk protein which will most likely just give her diarrhea.

What I would do is get a good grain free food for her, or one that is primarily meat (no corn, wheat, etc). These are high in protein and a better protein source. Cats are carnivores so they need meat as their primary diet. The link below will give you more information on cat nutrition.

What I gave mine that were needing to put on weight after an illness was meat flavored baby food. Just be sure not to get the ones with onions..I use Gerber and Beech Nut. Warm it slightly in the microwave. You could give her a jar a day for a few days. Baby food does not have the proper nutrients to be a primary diet staple, but it is good for situations such as this.

Another thing I do as a treat for my cats is get the ground chicken or turkey and fry it for them. I divide the tray into small cubes and freeze. Then I get a cube out, thaw and fry. They love it and it is good for them.

Purrs to you and kitty.

The best bet is to contact the vet and ask. For emaciated animals gaining there weight back to fast can be harmful to them.

Either give her kitten chow, which is full of nutrients, or if she is much older, give her senior chow to help replenish nutrients needed for the older cat. You can also give her plain yogurt, this will help her digestion. I used to give one of my older cats pure pumpkin from the can, not spiced! This will help with fiber issues.

I’d definately would give her the kitten food. You can also try some kitten milk. There are a few different kinds, but most popular is called kmr. Not sure about the ensure. Ask a vet to be on the safe side.
