    Placebo acupuncture …
Placebo acupuncture and random needle placement have been shown to be just as effective as needles placed by a trained acupuncturist. The explanation given for why needles placed in and around the dorsal horns of the spinal cord makes sense physiologically, but that’s about where it ends. Acupuncture’s effectiveness has nothing to do with “qi” and invisible currents through our bodies. I would much rather have a treatment that is well understood and observable.

    Acupuncture is not …
Acupuncture is not like drugs in that it does not have nearly as many adverse effects as even the most benign drugs have. His statements on drugs say plenty about that. Not all acupuncture mechanisms are known or even able to be tested. However, there are some CT studies that have shown that it is directly correlated to reactions in the brain. Maybe it only masks some symptoms, but it can be an effective treatment for chronic illnesses that cannot be treated by drugs.

    Acupuncture doesn’t …
Acupuncture doesn’t do anything, why is it being catergorized with “health” ? It does the same thing that the video claims that drugs do, mask symptoms without treating the cause, only acupuncture doesn’t have to go through several double blind studies to prove its effectiveness

    THe title should be …
THe title should be western medical science VS eastern medical science. Western medical science focus more on obvious disease that they need some big operation and strong medicine. Eastern medical science focus more on what is cause of disease and how to get rid of cause to be compleately well and natural way to cure.

    The next time you …
The next time you put cayenne on your food, unless your a woose, ask yourself how you feel…are you sweaty, does it make you hot, burn your tongue…it is the very action of herbs that makes them medicine.
Capsaicin Cream is made from cayenne peppers!
Try mint…cooling, helps digestion, makes your breath smell good
Aspirin is from the Willow Tree
But aspirin is a chemically altered version.
Both have salicylic acid in them, the active ingredient.
    Snake Oil…pharmaceuticals can be too.

    You cannot link …
You cannot link what a few people “that you know” have done to all of natural therapeutics. “Good Science” as you call it, is unbiased, and exploratory as well. To oppose this is “bad science” which tests things with an desired outcome in mind, and which is funded by corporations…
Good science is proving the efficacy of natural methods, diet, supplements, vitamins, movement therapies, etc. every day. Wake up! NIH funds research at some institutions now for natural medicine!

Really? Read the book “The Hundred Year Lie”, put together by the investigative journalist Randall Fitzgerald. I think you’ll find it’s best to be informed before you speak, Dr Peter B.

This is all I know. …
This is all I know. When I took drugs and went to the doctor for all my health care I was ALWAYS sick. Since I have cleaned up my diet and taken a few choice supplements I am the most well I have ever been. My husband and children are the same. Really nasty bugs hit town and they bounce off us. Scientific proof or not I have fantastic health. Everything else has followed now in our lives.

    One of my uncles …
One of my uncles uses around 20 different medications a day. He takes this because he believes that this will improve his health. He also claims that everybody around him including himself is diabetic.

I should probably talk to him some time about topics like this to try and take healthier and less costly routes to help him out.

Thanks for the video and keep up the good work!

    sorry for all the …
sorry for all the comments, but i appreciate the discussion. you are definitely correct that only a few forms of “alternative health” are medication-based. but these are the potentially dangerous ones and i think it’s important to make the distinction since many people wrongfully believe any alternative is better (and drugs are the first thing they think of when it comes to health).

    the problem i have …
the problem i have with the way you presented this video is the “drugs vs. alternative medicine” theme. good doctors don’t chose one and run with it, there’s a middle ground. i also have a problem with the different definitions of “alternative medicine” used. for many, it IS an “alternative to science.” you are absolutely correct that the scientific method has its limits. but when it comes to what people do to their bodies, i’d rather take the scientific method over snake oil.

    Most form of …
Most form of alternative health do not involve medications, in fact only a few actually do.

Chiropractic, physical therapy, message therapy, acupuncture, acupressure, meditation, clinical nutrition, orthomolecular psychiatry, etc. are all alternative health systems.

Orthomolecular psychiatry was invented by a double Nobel prize winner in science by the way.

    Alternative health …
Alternative health does not mean “alternative science”.

Does the validity of something depend on A) natural law or B) whether or not it’s been tested w/ the scientific method?

If science discovers something to be true, was it true before science discovered it?

Many forms of alternative health have been validated and/or discovered through science as well.

  23. ssnatcherss

    October 13, 2009 at 12:01 pm

    to add to my …
to add to my comment, alternative drugs are the modern day equivalent of snake oil. why take chemicals (natural or not) that lack objective scientific evidence to support their claimed effects? i’ve known people who’d eat poisonous plants since they were told the plants were “alternative medicine” and that they could cure breast cancer… there’s no alternative to good science.

  24. ssnatcherss

    October 13, 2009 at 12:01 pm

    science is science. …
science is science. there’s no such thing as “alternative science.” there is only science (using observations and logic to understand nature) and “not science” (dogma).
now chemical medicine is not the only solution to health problems, but in MANY cases it IS necessary to help the body regulate and maintain itself. but you are completely correct that people are overly- dependant on drugs to maintain their health. excersize, self-relaxation, sleep, and nutrition go a long way.

    I agree with the …
I agree with the analogy about using crutches for the most part – would probably disagree w/ it only for certain conditions like some extreme forms of bipolar, schizophrenia. True though, that even then medications are no cure, and that sleep modification and other routines and basic diet/exercise hygiene and things that aid in that like alternative health/treatment can be very beneficial and can help someone gain insight – thanks for the response!
