I own to small poodles. I am interested in going all natural, herbal, holistic (whatever the proper terms are). My goal is to feed my dogs treats and foods that will be the best nutrition and serve as a method of preventitive health care. I want to prevent infections, cancers, allergies, etc, etc through the foods and treats I use. I have done some research and I am hearing about cranberries, blueberries, and coconut oils as treats. But I would benefit from the advice of people who are actually doing this. Please share with me your stories and experiences. What really works?
Well raw diets are the best for your dogs to eat but if you are talking about dry dog food then food from the Nutura company is the best they have Innova Evo, Orijen, California Natural, along with some other foods. Yes feeeding the berries you mentioned are great dog treats. I also like to feed carrots and apples as treats too.

The very best food for your pups is a raw diet, such as B.A.R.F. This can be very expensive though, so if it’s a canned or kibble diet you’re in the market for, choose a food that has:
- An identified real meat source as the first ingredient. For example look for "chicken", "lamb", "fish", etc. Skip anything that lists "meat" or any unidentified source, this can be just about anything, including dog and cat meat or road kill.
- At lease one more identified meat ingredients in the following 3 ingredients. These are often meals or by-products, which are fine, as long as they’re not the first ingredient.
- No corn, wheat, or soy.
- No artificial anything.
- Made in the USA. (I think Canada is safe too, avoid China.)
Good foods to consider include:
Wellness, By Nature Organics, Innova EVO, Blue Buffalo, and Canidae. .
Over priced junk foods that are often recommended by folks who don’t do their research include:
Iams, Eukanuba, Science Diet, and Neutro.
BTW, "holistic" is meaningless in regards to pet food. It’s just a term companies use on thier food to make it seem like it’s better than it is.

~ DANGEROUS DOG TREATS ~
All dogs love treats but do you know which ones are truly safe and which ones could be fatal?
There have been recent reports that "Greenies" are dangerous and sometimes fatal. A CNN investigation uncovered 40 cases since 2003 where a veterinarian had to extract a Greenie from a dog after the treat became stuck in the dogs esophagus or intestine and in 13 of those cases the dog died. If your dog eats a Greenie and displays the following symptoms: vomiting, bloody stool, difficult breathing; seek medical treatment immediately. Buyer Beware
Rawhide Chews – Dogs Love Them – but they are dangerous and should be avoided. Many rawhides are brought in from outside of the United States and can actually be preserved with arsenic based chemicals and some that cause cancer . In addition rawhides pose a potential choking danger because as your dog chews off pieces some of those pieces could become lodged in your dogs throat. Up to 40% of dogs are allergic to rawhide chews
Animal Bones – Especially chicken and turkey bones are brittle and can easily splinter and cause choking. Some pork and beef bones can also have this potential. If you decided to give your dog an animal bone; use a shin bone but make sure you supervise
Never give Cow Hooves – they can splinter into sharp pieces that have killed many dogs.
Smoked Pig Ears – the smoked pig ears are coated with a carcinogenic coating
Do Not Use Any Dog Treats that contain the following: BHA, BHT, ethoxyquin, propylene glycol, menadione – also known as dimethylprimidinol sulfateand corn syrups/sugar that cause cancer.
Non-Edible Nylabones have the potential of being dangerous because if your dog bites off a small piece that gets into their system, it could cause problems and cannot be detected on an X-Ray.
ALWAYS SUPERVISE YOUR DOG WHEN FEEDING THEM DOG TREATS AS ANY TREAT HAS THE POTENTIAL TO BE A DANGEROUS DOG TREAT IF YOUR PET SWALLOWS IT WHOLE OR HAS A HABIT OF GULPING THEIR FOOD
~ TREATS THAT ARE SAFE FOR YOUR DOG ~
Natural pig ears (not smoked)
Edible Nylabones
American made Bully Sticks
Unbleached natural lamb ears
Kong Goodie Ships
Stuffable hard rubber toys
Frozen carrots – naturally clean teeth
